Spinal Stenosis Treatment

Spinal Stenosis Treatment

What is it?

Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal column, which in turn exerts pressure on the spinal cord, or the narrowing of the openings from where spinal nerves leave the spinal column.

Associated conditions

  • Arthritis of the spine, usually in middle-aged or elderly people
  • Bone diseases, such as Paget disease
  • Defect or growth in the spine that was present from birth
  • Herniated or slipped disk, which often happened in the past
  • An injury that causes pressure on the nerve roots or the spinal cord
  • Tumors in the spine

Test & Diagnosis

The detection begins with a physical exam during which the patient is asked to:

  • Sit, stand, and walk. The doctor may also ask you to walk on your toes and then on your heels.
  • Bend forward, backward, and sideways.
  • Lift your legs straight up while lying down.

A brain and nervous system examination may be used to confirm the diagnosis. The following tests may be done:

  • EMG
  • Spinal MRI or spinal CT scan
  • X-ray of the spine

Spinal stenosis symptoms often become worse over time and ultimately require management via surgical options  or relieve pressure on the nerves or spinal cord.

The surgical procedure may include:

  1. Removal of a bulging disc
  2. Removal of the protruding vertebra
  3. Widening of the opening where the spinal nerves are

The different types of surgical options include:

Disc Replacement
